WHAT IT COSTS TO WASH AT HOME
A home machine takes about 90 minutes for 7kg, and you’re paying for water, power, detergent and the wear on the machine — before you’ve hung anything out or waited two days for it to dry in winter.
A 12kg wash and dry here is $16 and you’re out the door in about an hour, with everything dry.
For doonas, bedding and anything bulky it isn’t close. A home machine shouldn’t be washing a king doona at all — it’s the fastest way to kill the bearings.
RIGHT-SIZED, NOT OVERSIZED
Some laundromats push you into a 27kg machine. Most households haven’t got 27kg of washing.
We run three sizes so you can put in what you’ve actually got and pay for that — not for a half-empty drum. A typical week for a family of four fits comfortably in a 12kg at $10.
Got a doona, a sleeping bag or a fortnight’s backlog? That’s what the 20kg is for.

Sensitive skin, allergies, cloth nappies, or a brand you’ve used for years? Bring it in. Forgot, or just passing through? Ours is at the counter.

The washing was just the reason you came in.
Laundromats have a reputation. Fluorescent light, a row of plastic chairs bolted to the wall, an old magazine, and an hour of your life you’ll never account for.
I didn’t want to run one of those.
So I built the Lounge around the hour rather than the machines. There’s a four-seater leather lounge and eight more seats, which means there’s somewhere to sit even when we’re busy. There are two large tables — wide enough to fold a king doona flat, or to open a laptop and actually get something done. The wi-fi is free and it’s quick enough to work on properly, take a call, or let the kids watch something while you wait.
And we’re not on our own. We’re one of six shops in the building. There’s a café for a decent coffee and something to eat, a hair salon, a beauty salon, an Indian restaurant from midday, and a biltong shop. Put a load on and get your hair cut. Answer emails over a flat white. Have lunch while the dryer runs.
What we’ve noticed already is that people talk to each other here. Regulars turn up at the same time each week and end up sitting together. Someone shows a first-timer which button to press. It’s the sort of thing that used to happen at the corner shop and mostly doesn’t anymore.
